Can AI Feedback Help Students Improve an Essay Without Rewriting It for Them?
A student can finish a draft, meet the word count, and still be unsure whether the argument is clear. This often becomes apparent when they try to explain how each paragraph supports the thesis. Revising the sentences alone may leave that problem unresolved.
I have been considering how intelligent essay writing software could fit into this stage of the writing process. One possible use is to ask for a summary of the argument the draft appears to make, then compare it with the student’s own outline. A difference between the two would give the student something specific to examine.
The student would still need to decide what to revise and check every claim against the sources they actually read. I am curious how educators use this kind of feedback in practice. Have you found an exercise that helps students assess AI suggestions while keeping responsibility for their argument and final draft?
